Shannon McClintock Miller
Just outside of Des Moines, Iowa is the school library within Van Meter Community School overseen by Shannon McClintock Miller (@shannonmiller) of http://vanmeterlibraryvoice.blogspot.com/.? Shannon is the district teacher librarian and integration specialist at Van Meter Community School, helping teach children about the benefits of learning through the Internet, and the tools of the 21st century library.
This year?s project for the town?s kindergarten children was to learn more about the animals that, in Iowa, are part of their lives.? ?The Iowa Animal Research Project? had each of the little ones pick out an Iowa animal they were curious about and find even more than they already might have connected to when they started. They researched, found information, wrote it down, created a model of their animal, presented to their classmates, drew their animal online using TuxPaint, and then took the knowledge of their Iowa animal to put into one last collaborative eBook.
Students, at the initial stages of their educational lives are becoming comfortable using broadband access to the Internet through their school library and home to find information they would not, otherwise, have the capacity to locate.? Having dedicated teachers like Shannon McClintock Miller teaching not just the subject matter, but teaching how to use the tools to find new information on their own, will create a far richer educational environment for the students she touches.
